Od Megiles luksus do Jidisze tajwes: współczesna chasydzka kultura popularna w jidysz – zapraszamy 14 maja o godz. 16 na konwersacje jidysz dla średnio zaawansowanych.
? Chasydzka popkultura przeżywa ogromny renesans, o czym świadczą produkowane niemal bez przerwy nowe albumy muzyczne, sztuki teatralne czy filmy. W ciągu ostatnich kilkunastu lat, popkultura chasydzka rozwinęła się z quasi-punkowej sceny DIY w biznes wykraczający daleko poza granice ortodoksyjnych dzielnic Nowego Jorku czy Jerozolimy. Spora część tej produkcji kulturalnej tworzona jest w hejmisz jidysz – dialekcie używanym na co dzień w chasydzkich społecznościach.
?? Zapraszam do rozmowy o najciekawszych twórcach (i twórczyniach) chasydzkich, wyzwaniach, które chasydzka halacha i obyczaj narzuca chasydzkiej popkulturze, czy o tym, dlaczego przełomowym wydarzeniem dla historii chasydyzmu był wynalazek syntezatora i cyfrowej kamery.

Wojciech Tworek – adiunkt w Katedrze Judaistyki od 2019 roku. Interesuje się historią i kulturą chasydyzmu oraz żydowskiej ortodoksji. Studiował filozofię (UJ) i hebraistykę (UW). Doktorat, pisany pod kierownictwem Ady Rapoport-Albert i Naftalego Loewenthala, obronił na University College London. Prowadził zajęcia na letnim kursie jidysz Ot Azoy! w Londynie i w Centrum Historii Miejskiej Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej we Lwowie. Okazjonalnie pisuje do „Afn Szwel” na tematy związane z popularną kulturą chasydzką.
From Megiles luksus to Yidishe tayves: contemporary Hasidic Yiddish pop culture
? Hasidic pop culture is experiencing a huge renaissance, as evidenced by the almost constant stream of new music albums, theatrical productions, and films. Over the last decades, Hasidic pop culture has developed from a quasi-punk DIY scene to a business that extends far beyond the orthodox neighborhoods of New York or Jerusalem. A significant portion of this cultural production is created in Heimish Yiddish – a dialect used on a daily basis in Hasidic communities.
?? I invite you to discuss the most interesting Hasidic creators (both male and female), the challenges that Hasidic halacha and customs impose on pop culture, and why the invention of the synthesizer and digital camera was a breakthrough event in the history of Hasidism.

Wojciech Tworek – is Assistant Professor in the Taube Department of Jewish Studies. His work concerns Hasidism and Jewish orthodoxy, with the focus on the Chabad movement. Following his doctoral training at University College London, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wrocław and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Toronto. He held grants and fellowships of the YIVO Institute, the Posen Foundation and the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. In addition to his research on Hasidism, Wojciech has been involved in Yiddish culture. He taught at Ot Azoy! Festival in London and at the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe in Lviv. He was also a member of the team working on the English translation of the Yiddish documents from the Ringelblum Archive. He has been a sporadic contributor to Afn shvel on issues related to Haredi Yiddish culture. His first book, Eternity Now: Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liady and Temporality (State University of New York Press 2019) explores the nexus of theology and praxis in the teachings of the founder of the Chabad Hasidic movement. His second book, and annotated translation of Natan Sternhartz’s Yeme moharnat is scheduled for publication in 2020. His current project, “Mysticism and Modernity”, founded by the National Science Centre in Poland, examines cultural and social history of the Chabad movement in interwar Poland.
